Activities

Besides providing a venue for people to meet and socialise, the World House also organises activities for personal development and social integration. These include workshops about access to employment and healthcare, and even about medical issues such as Covid-19. They also include creative activities such as learning to sew, under the instruction of Ilmira.

Phoenix group

For undocumented people with an LGBTQIA+ background there are weekly support meetings, which are coordinated by Catalina Raitzin. During these meetings, members of the community come by to mingle and connect with each other, talk about LGBTQIA+ rights or their asylum procedures, share stories of common challenges, or simply to have some fun. Interested in joining this group? Drop by the open house and let us know.

World mothers!

At World mothers! undocumented mothers can meet and be supported in an accessible way. The purpose of the World Mothers is threefold; first a moment of relaxation and rest for the mothers who often take care of their children 24-7. As a second space for mutual encounter and exchange of experience and the third element is learning new things through courses and lessons. In addition to language lessons, various topics are discussed such as contraception, nutrition, rights and personal hygiene, but relaxation exercises, self-defense lessons and dance lessons are also performed. On Tuesdays, women and their children can visit a child-friendly location in Amsterdam East and on Fridays they can visit the location in Zuid.

Voluntary work

Visitors can also participate in voluntary work. Our catering staff, hosts and hostesses, cleaners and gardeners are all volunteers, and part of the World House family! If you’re interested in volunteering, just talk to one of our teams members.
